<br />
This is the second Amy Butler Weekender Bag that I have made. Let me tell you, THIS one came together SO much easier than the first! I didn't bend any pins, didn't stick myself, didn't break any needles and didn't have to rip out or restitch any areas! I like the look of the fabric collage I have seen on several websites, but I didn't want to "quilt" mine. I went with the "collage" look but still used the Peltex and interfacing. I did make a couple of changes to this one. First I added 4" to each strap so my daughter can slip the straps easily on her shoulders. I see where some people have made the straps wider. Instead of cutting the fabric 3" wide, I cut mine 3 1/2" wide. Just a little bit wider, but still in scale with the rest of the bag. I used 5/32" cotton piping. It was a lot easier to manipulate. I used the correct weight interfacing for the zipper area which made it 100% easier to put together! Last time I used a heavyweight interfacing. I haven't added the lining yet, I'll post pics when I'm completely finished. (That's my least favorite part.) All in all, this was a very enjoyable project and I hope my daughter likes it!<br />

This bag was a pleasure to make! The pattern was exact, easy to follow and I even learned a few new techniques.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I finished <a href="http://kathiflyart.blogspot.com/2013/07/my-amy-butler-weekender-bag-photo.html">my Amy Butler Weekender bag</a> a few weeks ago, I have been wanting to make the Sophia Bag. My local fabric store didn't have the pattern so I ordered it from <a href="http://fabric.com/">fabric.com</a> and it arrived in 3 days! After the Weekender bag, I felt like I could tackle anything. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did learn how to add pockets to the interior lining, how to join piping almost seamlessly, and how to add "X" for extra support on the handles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love <a href="http://www.annamariahorner.com/productfabric.html">Anna Maria Horner fabrics</a> and I saved the scraps from other projects that I have made using her fabrics. I love the "Drawing Room" collection Volumes pattern but I didn't have enough for the whole bag so I used every scrap of Anna Maria Horner fabric that I had. You'll see later in the lining! The piping fabric is an old Debbie Mumm fabric that I've had in my stash for about 10 years.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the way it turned out!</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Here is a close-up of the "X" extra support on the handles.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JdQUPrDMwME/UglRpmH105I/AAAAAAAAF5o/PLJp2Yn-Xiw/s1600/IMG_4518.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JdQUPrDMwME/UglRpmH105I/AAAAAAAAF5o/PLJp2Yn-Xiw/s640/IMG_4518.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you've never made piping before it is really easy to make with a zipper foot. I always use fabric on the bias which stretches around the curves. If you look closely at the needle position you can see I am sewing close to the piping just enough to push it over a little and stitch inside the previous stitching line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b7jHBq09NKI/UglRxjCH9kI/AAAAAAAAF5w/XE9pcSXlrlM/s1600/IMG_4522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b7jHBq09NKI/UglRxjCH9kI/AAAAAAAAF5w/XE9pcSXlrlM/s640/IMG_4522.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Some of the instructions I had to read and reread! Below I am adding piping to the bottom panel. The drawings in the instructions made it look like you were to cut a square at the corner of the piping. But I followed the directions and cut a little slit with my scissors and when you turn the piping to attach to the short end, a little square opens up. It turned out perfect! I am such a visual learner.......I like to see things. I thought this might help someone else if you are going to make this bag.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YDlbaKYjozc/UglSTK5mJYI/AAAAAAAAF6I/r9D--XvPspg/s1600/IMG_4525.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YDlbaKYjozc/UglSTK5mJYI/AAAAAAAAF6I/r9D--XvPspg/s640/IMG_4525.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Also, I usually join two ends of piping by just lapping one over the other. But, the directions show you how to cut the piping, putting edge to edge, fold under the hem and then wrap the fabric over the two edges making a nice and neat seam.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PJKPykDRWCU/UglSFFcgSmI/AAAAAAAAF54/HTAFdhF0oo0/s1600/IMG_4529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PJKPykDRWCU/UglSFFcgSmI/AAAAAAAAF54/HTAFdhF0oo0/s640/IMG_4529.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When sewing the zipper, the instructions call for you to baste the seam, line the zipper under the seam and sew 1/4" around the zipper on top. I outlined the 1/4" seam with a washable pen which makes it very easy to see where you are supposed to sew. Remember, the zipper is UNDER that seam!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6CDCCfgsk2o/UglSPhPtvQI/AAAAAAAAF6A/a-YlSyAA1hQ/s1600/IMG_4537.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6CDCCfgsk2o/UglSPhPtvQI/AAAAAAAAF6A/a-YlSyAA1hQ/s640/IMG_4537.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Whew.........after several hours of sewing my sweet husband brought me a Black Cherry Mister Misty from QT. They always come in handy and make sewing a whole lot more enjoyable!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tLZlEr8JWxQ/UglSWgicy5I/AAAAAAAAF6Q/HamAnzMcLDU/s1600/IMG_4538.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tLZlEr8JWxQ/UglSWgicy5I/AAAAAAAAF6Q/HamAnzMcLDU/s640/IMG_4538.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is what the bag looks like when you add the top panel to the first side panel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i0X88t_e1fg/UglS4SKq6zI/AAAAAAAAF6Y/OP-xT2FuzX8/s1600/IMG_4541.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i0X88t_e1fg/UglS4SKq6zI/AAAAAAAAF6Y/OP-xT2FuzX8/s640/IMG_4541.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ae2aRQf9JMg/UglS-Ogj5DI/AAAAAAAAF6o/l0wXl7kGC5k/s1600/IMG_4544.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ae2aRQf9JMg/UglS-Ogj5DI/AAAAAAAAF6o/l0wXl7kGC5k/s640/IMG_4544.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I have added both side panels to the the zippered top panel. At this point, I thought it was looking like a toaster cover or an old fashioned bowling bag. I do like the retro rounded shape!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gUrqFOv491w/UglS5IZsAsI/AAAAAAAAF6g/AqoxoTkNxLQ/s1600/photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gUrqFOv491w/UglS5IZsAsI/AAAAAAAAF6g/AqoxoTkNxLQ/s640/photo.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Below I am sewing the bottom panel to the bag. I have already sewn the long sides and now I am sewing the short sides. You can see how the bag piping lines up just inside of the bottom panel piping. I sewed a 1/2" seam and it turned out perfectly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jCmrrTSJLgg/UglTLUm3ugI/AAAAAAAAF6w/O4YYk7vnZNI/s1600/IMG_4547.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jCmrrTSJLgg/UglTLUm3ugI/AAAAAAAAF6w/O4YYk7vnZNI/s640/IMG_4547.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Also, while reading the instructions, I couldn't figure out how to clip the corners. But, when you sew all the layers together, it is easy to see where to snip off the corner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GvyT1e8X2C0/UglTMkJqzpI/AAAAAAAAF64/zy-68W-8Rkk/s1600/IMG_4551.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="578" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GvyT1e8X2C0/UglTMkJqzpI/AAAAAAAAF64/zy-68W-8Rkk/s640/IMG_4551.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
Bag finished............next the lining...........<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9d5M2jDy5vI/UglTbgR72tI/AAAAAAAAF7A/YRqdh_TDyJA/s1600/IMG_4552.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="506" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9d5M2jDy5vI/UglTbgR72tI/AAAAAAAAF7A/YRqdh_TDyJA/s640/IMG_4552.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I used up all of my favorite Anna Maria Horner scraps for the lining. The lining is my least favorite part to make because of all of the hand sewing but I'm glad I took my time because it turned out perfect.<br />
<br />

I really love this bag! It was fun to make. It was kind of like birthing a baby. Now that the "birthing" process is over, you forget how painful it was! And you have this gorgeous bundle to show off.</div>

I really love this bag! Oh, yea, I mentioned that already. One reason is that it reminds me of a yellow Samsonite overnight bag I had back in the 1970's. I took this bag to college with me.<br />

I think I am one of the last to jump on the Amy Butler Weekender Bag band wagon. I've had this pattern for 3 years, the fabric for two years. I even had the pieces cut out! I was so intimidated by the pattern after reading all of the tutorials online and the horror stories that this project just sat in the corner of my studio, calling out "make me" every few months. I meant to make it for our trip to Jekyll Island 2 years ago. Then, I really wanted to take it to Orange Beach last summer. Well, I'm glad to say, that it will be ready for our trip to Orange Beach this summer! I got up my courage, read and reread all of the tips and jumped right in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've read a lot of posts where people complain about the cost of this bag and how long it took them to cut out all of the pieces. Well you can look at it this way, if you wait 3 years to make your bag, it will already be paid for and it's nice to start on a project where you can't remember what a pain it was to cut out all the pieces!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was an art major and have always been a visual learner. I took a lot of photos of this process, ones that I have not seen on other sites. I wanted to document the good and the bad. I've never made a BIG bag like this monster before, so I really wasn't sure what some of the steps involved. I had to read and reread the directions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am using my very old Bernina 1130 that I got way back in 1983. I love it and it runs like a charm. It can even sew through 12 layers of fabric. Let's see what it can do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really like stitching my own cording. The directions tell you not to stitch too close to the cord, leaving room to restitch closer when the panels are added. I saw where some people used store bought cording or used Stitch Witchery. This cording since it will be attached around corners, etc. is purposely cut on the bias (which stretches). When I stitched mine onto the front of the panels, I pulled it a little to make it stretch while I was sewing. That will make a nice tight fit. Sometimes, if you don't stretch, it will buckle a little. I like the look of handmade cording but the next bag I make (I must have a death wish!) I will use a smaller diameter cording. In Step 11, I didn't have room to stitch the 1/2" seam around the panels..........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-opJw6q1FO8s/UeiWfbS-L0I/AAAAAAAAF1I/NJzMTvO0b50/s1600/MakingCording.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-opJw6q1FO8s/UeiWfbS-L0I/AAAAAAAAF1I/NJzMTvO0b50/s640/MakingCording.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I like to use pins........lots of pins. Here I am sewing the cording on the large front pocket. I know it looks like overkill, but I've made enough pockets where I didn't pin all around, then the fabric slipped leaving the pocket uneven.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ld-l3X__L6M/UeiWrX6n80I/AAAAAAAAF1Q/IV3Oo9ldlo4/s1600/Pin+around+front+pocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ld-l3X__L6M/UeiWrX6n80I/AAAAAAAAF1Q/IV3Oo9ldlo4/s640/Pin+around+front+pocket.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There were so many horrifying stories of people sewing through their fingers, pin stabs, and punctures that I thought I was doing pretty well, until a pin poked me leaving my DNA on the fabric. That's when I take a break and chill. Start again the next day.<br />
<br />
I didn't make too many changes on this bag. One change I made on the straps was to do a double topstitching instead of single.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DR4ITdiZDx0/UeiWzIWKwpI/AAAAAAAAF1Y/4Q7JKMNkFQ8/s1600/My+DNA.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DR4ITdiZDx0/UeiWzIWKwpI/AAAAAAAAF1Y/4Q7JKMNkFQ8/s640/My+DNA.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is the front panel with pocket in place and straps being stitched. Looking pretty good. So far no broken needles, only 1 pin stick. I did use jeans needles and made sure I had a brand new sharp needle at the beginning of the project.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xXPnfSf9O7M/UeiXSNjc08I/AAAAAAAAF1w/KRIJW_NfQxA/s1600/Front+Panel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xXPnfSf9O7M/UeiXSNjc08I/AAAAAAAAF1w/KRIJW_NfQxA/s640/Front+Panel.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This Walking Foot really helped when stitching through multiple layers. I thought I would be able to use it more, but really I used the Zipper foot most of the time because you have to stitch so dang close to the cording. When stitching straight lines (without cording) the Walking Foot saves you a lot of screaming and ripping because it hugs those lower layers and keeps them all lined up neatly.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J3ePMXur9NM/UeiW8VnN1dI/AAAAAAAAF1g/WErxyczA2-I/s1600/Walking+Foot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J3ePMXur9NM/UeiW8VnN1dI/AAAAAAAAF1g/WErxyczA2-I/s640/Walking+Foot.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here I am stitching the cording all around the front panel using the Zipper foot. I found it easier to use short sturdy pins. None of these pins bent. I started out using the longer pins with the yellow tips, and they all bent. I stitched close to the cording but not as close as I could have knowing that I still have to stitch another line next to it when adding the center panel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYRUQOeaBbk/UeiXFXd_jNI/AAAAAAAAF1o/NmmZ_49Ij_4/s1600/Panel+Cording.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZYRUQOeaBbk/UeiXFXd_jNI/AAAAAAAAF1o/NmmZ_49Ij_4/s640/Panel+Cording.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
OK, this is the front panel completed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3GMGvsOC08k/UeiXV0q-wUI/AAAAAAAAF14/F27iJfyYBiU/s1600/Front+Panel+finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3GMGvsOC08k/UeiXV0q-wUI/AAAAAAAAF14/F27iJfyYBiU/s640/Front+Panel+finished.jpg" width="488" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The directions call for 3 layers of fusible interfacing added to the center panels. By the time I ironed all the interfacing in place, it looked like craft foam! I couldn't imagine how I was going to press the seams open. This is where you add the zipper. I've never inserted a zipper in this manner before where you stitch a seam, add the zipper, flip upside down and stitch around the zipper, then use the seam ripper to open the seam above the zipper. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-og0rgoUDAo0/UeiXcNA-NFI/AAAAAAAAF2A/WHhojKCn4oo/s1600/Top+Panel.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-og0rgoUDAo0/UeiXcNA-NFI/AAAAAAAAF2A/WHhojKCn4oo/s640/Top+Panel.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here is the seam, pressed open, zipper pinned in place.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BV7ZgmWpBAE/UeiXyqAtr9I/AAAAAAAAF2Q/yDwR9FDyQqw/s1600/Zipper+pinned.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BV7ZgmWpBAE/UeiXyqAtr9I/AAAAAAAAF2Q/yDwR9FDyQqw/s640/Zipper+pinned.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Next you flip the whole piece upside down, remember the zipper and pins are on the BOTTOM! I marked my 1/4" seam and started stitching. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRVLT1-vrWk/UeiXvM01e4I/AAAAAAAAF2I/Jk8sr9coA1U/s1600/Sewing+Zipper.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRVLT1-vrWk/UeiXvM01e4I/AAAAAAAAF2I/Jk8sr9coA1U/s640/Sewing+Zipper.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then you just use a seam ripper and open the seam...........leaving a perfectly sewn zipper. Honestly, this was one of my biggest fears...............sewing a zipper in this bag. But the directions were perfect and the zipper came out looking outstanding. Patting myself on the back.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WGoGRdqnYx0/UeiX2sO-0CI/AAAAAAAAF2Y/Rts9WQP4qsc/s1600/Zipper+complete.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WGoGRdqnYx0/UeiX2sO-0CI/AAAAAAAAF2Y/Rts9WQP4qsc/s640/Zipper+complete.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is my Edgestitch Foot which helps to stitch a perfect topstitch below the cording on the pocket. I just move my needle position to the left or right. I am making the smaller side pockets here which are attached to the bottom of the center panel. I did add cording to the top of these pockets which wasn't called for in the pattern'<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I9JTsYIOhzc/UeiYADzaI8I/AAAAAAAAF2g/yD6jIACtuh0/s1600/Topstitch+side+pocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-I9JTsYIOhzc/UeiYADzaI8I/AAAAAAAAF2g/yD6jIACtuh0/s640/Topstitch+side+pocket.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
This is what the center panel looks like stitched to the bottom panel. There are pockets sewn at the bottom of the side panels. You can see the interfacing is not stitched on one side of the bottom panel so you can slip the Peltex bottom in later.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8CGvkn6Ur0Y/UeiYdc_qqnI/AAAAAAAAF24/5bHaDcfzx8I/s1600/Center+Panels.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8CGvkn6Ur0Y/UeiYdc_qqnI/AAAAAAAAF24/5bHaDcfzx8I/s640/Center+Panels.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
One side panel stitched to the center panel and another one pinned in place. The smaller pins stayed in place better for me instead of the clips that other people used.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gAkpsHGKUO0/UeiYL8D_N6I/AAAAAAAAF2o/kwjTYsvtDQM/s1600/Second+panel+pinned.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gAkpsHGKUO0/UeiYL8D_N6I/AAAAAAAAF2o/kwjTYsvtDQM/s640/Second+panel+pinned.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the dreaded Step 11 where I'm trying to stitch the bottom panel to the center panel and it seems like I have to stitch through about 32 layers! Everything was going OK up until now. I thought, wow, this isn't so bad. What are other people talking about? I can do this. But, wowzers, this was really frustrating because the Peltex was so hard to bend and get everything under the needle in the right position. It kept popping out. You just have to go with it. I only screamed one expletive! But no broken needles!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xCQ0Q6HDGTE/UeiYQDCnGSI/AAAAAAAAF2w/PmiDx7B68BE/s1600/Dredded+step+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xCQ0Q6HDGTE/UeiYQDCnGSI/AAAAAAAAF2w/PmiDx7B68BE/s640/Dredded+step+11.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
OK, I haven't seen too many mistakes shown in other posts, but I wanted to show you what can happen. The layers are so darn thick and you are pressing so hard to just feel the cording underneath that I didn't get all of the layers stitched in the seam. That was the end of that night. I was so frustrated that I went to bed, thinking that I would need to rip out the whole panel and start over. But....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--PIjTKuFAgM/UeiYjAYHU4I/AAAAAAAAF3A/avJdLFhBoP8/s1600/Mistake.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--PIjTKuFAgM/UeiYjAYHU4I/AAAAAAAAF3A/avJdLFhBoP8/s640/Mistake.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
I tried sewing another seam all the way around the panel, pushing as close as I could to the cording. It worked! So, if at first you don't succeed, try stitching around and around again until you get it as close to the cording as you can. I'm satisfied!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oPnVCFrH4no/UeiYsQl_3mI/AAAAAAAAF3I/8NQZEPuiUjA/s1600/Mistake+repaired.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oPnVCFrH4no/UeiYsQl_3mI/AAAAAAAAF3I/8NQZEPuiUjA/s640/Mistake+repaired.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You can see the edge of the Peltex under the fusible interfacing. The Peltex is so stiff and thick that it is hard to get the zipper foot close enough to the cording. You can see how I have stitched two times, closer each time to the cording . I think the next time I make this bag I will use a smaller cording which will give me more room to sew even closer to the piping. As it is, my zipper foot kept slipping off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_3mjafNBokQ/UeiY1PwjDrI/AAAAAAAAF3Q/mAgy_KIwYBA/s1600/Peltex+slipping.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_3mjafNBokQ/UeiY1PwjDrI/AAAAAAAAF3Q/mAgy_KIwYBA/s640/Peltex+slipping.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally I get to start on the lining. I've never made a bag like this before and wasn't familiar with how to sew in a lining. It took me a long time to figure it out, after reading over and over the directions. <br />
Here, I am tacking the lining to the underneath panels and then slipstitching the lining close to the zipper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D1toFBH7O1Y/UeiY4ckepmI/AAAAAAAAF3Y/zwP1J0rTfXU/s1600/lining.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-D1toFBH7O1Y/UeiY4ckepmI/AAAAAAAAF3Y/zwP1J0rTfXU/s640/lining.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here it is, finally finished. I can't wait to use it next weekend!</div>

Hickory Flat is having a drawing for a brand new Saige doll, the 2013 American Girl Doll of the Year. You can buy a chance to win her for just $1.00 (or 6 chances for $5.) and you not only get the beautiful Saige doll, but her dog Rembrandt also. And, along with that, I have added an American Girl doll sized library tote, a Saige book, an American Girl Magazine and her very own library card. Also, since Saige loves to paint, I made her an artist's smock and a paint palette. Whoever wins this doll is going to have SO much fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, run to one of the Cherokee County libraries and buy a chance to win Saige! Now!</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_aizHJx_gE/UdzTWVAaC-I/AAAAAAAAF0I/mbYev3tdXqM/s1600/IMG_0453.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_aizHJx_gE/UdzTWVAaC-I/AAAAAAAAF0I/mbYev3tdXqM/s640/IMG_0453.jpg" width="542" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
It's been a long time since I have worked on a quilt but when I saw this pretty <a href="http://ellisonlane.blogspot.com/2011/04/starflower-block-tutorial.html">Star pattern</a> I knew I wanted to make one of my own!<br />
<br />
It is basically made out of half square triangles. I first chose eight patterns that would resemble a rainbow. This is a great stash buster!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x2FRkjwYPco/Udy5Vpkv1dI/AAAAAAAAFyw/QIsXK_qWYvk/s1600/IMG_0433.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x2FRkjwYPco/Udy5Vpkv1dI/AAAAAAAAFyw/QIsXK_qWYvk/s640/IMG_0433.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Cut the fabrics into 4" squares. You will need 2 of each (of the 8) colors for one block.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ux7kHvkk1vw/Udy5ghVd0PI/AAAAAAAAFy4/ETmPepwZv9A/s1600/IMG_3430.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ux7kHvkk1vw/Udy5ghVd0PI/AAAAAAAAFy4/ETmPepwZv9A/s640/IMG_3430.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
You can see the <a href="http://ellisonlane.blogspot.com/2011/04/starflower-block-tutorial.html">pattern here</a>. First I marked my 1/4" seams and the cutting line on each pair of squares.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VFLtDbZpZMM/Udy5naEZroI/AAAAAAAAFzA/6NiRikmKdaI/s1600/IMG_0435.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VFLtDbZpZMM/Udy5naEZroI/AAAAAAAAFzA/6NiRikmKdaI/s640/IMG_0435.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
A couple of years ago my sister in law gave me this nifty little gadget which easily marks the 1/4" seams and the cutting lines.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DSd8tLIygeE/Udy51bHT_9I/AAAAAAAAFzI/xM7LZpQ0Y9o/s1600/IMG_0436.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DSd8tLIygeE/Udy51bHT_9I/AAAAAAAAFzI/xM7LZpQ0Y9o/s640/IMG_0436.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
I have a large cutting board but it is really handy to have this little cutting board right next to my sewing machine. Just sew and cut.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gXS9Rwgaa5M/Udy6CKiY7NI/AAAAAAAAFzQ/2T1YDLfr1LQ/s1600/IMG_0438.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gXS9Rwgaa5M/Udy6CKiY7NI/AAAAAAAAFzQ/2T1YDLfr1LQ/s640/IMG_0438.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EXl9qSfFJL0/Udy6QZ594mI/AAAAAAAAFzY/E6DBv40XZ5E/s1600/IMG_0439.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EXl9qSfFJL0/Udy6QZ594mI/AAAAAAAAFzY/E6DBv40XZ5E/s640/IMG_0439.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
Here I have laid out all of the sewn half square triangles. Now, sew all the rows together and press the seams open.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QU3yyQQaSNs/Udy6bF5pC5I/AAAAAAAAFzg/em0ulrYnY_g/s1600/IMG_0440.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QU3yyQQaSNs/Udy6bF5pC5I/AAAAAAAAFzg/em0ulrYnY_g/s640/IMG_0440.jpg" width="546" /></a></div>
<br />
Be careful to line up the seams so all the seams point to the center.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s2D8RaoLnd0/Udy6uACIWXI/AAAAAAAAFzo/GmJTJahu3KI/s1600/IMG_0448.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-s2D8RaoLnd0/Udy6uACIWXI/AAAAAAAAFzo/GmJTJahu3KI/s640/IMG_0448.jpg" width="624" /></a></div>
<br />
One block finished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jPge7InoMYY/Udy646r1MlI/AAAAAAAAFzw/OMQnX9FGCoY/s1600/IMG_0443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="638" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jPge7InoMYY/Udy646r1MlI/AAAAAAAAFzw/OMQnX9FGCoY/s640/IMG_0443.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are the first two blocks. On to make the rest............<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">I have been creating some items for the Steampunk display we are making for the library. The theme for the teen summer reading program is "Beneath the Surface". Below are a few items that will come in handy while Zombie hunting. First is a Steampunk Journal. It's made from an old book I had saved from a discard from the library. The black hose is actually a plastic straw from a Six Flags cup. I made the gauge from a Powerade bottle cap and a downloaded print. I got the watch piece from my local jewelry store. They were happy to give me old watch pieces and gears. The larger gear I got from my local bicycle shop. They also had a big box full of old and bent gears and were happy to get rid of them. The other pieces I found in my mom's basement.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vLf6aODa1VQ/UcPAF_MoqII/AAAAAAAAFwY/N6_rQ_0kxQA/s1600/IMG_4050.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vLf6aODa1VQ/UcPAF_MoqII/AAAAAAAAFwY/N6_rQ_0kxQA/s640/IMG_4050.jpg" width="506" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">One of my co workers raided her son's stash of NERF guns. Her son said I could use it if he could have it back after it had been transformed into a Steampunk gun. I found the brass pieces at Goodwill (total $2.67) I made the gauge, and part of the plastic straw again. The silver and gold color is Rub 'n Buff I found at Hobby Lobby. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BKOa9lbzpcE/UcPAXNHDnhI/AAAAAAAAFwg/pXGk8DCkYDQ/s1600/IMG_4054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="438" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BKOa9lbzpcE/UcPAXNHDnhI/AAAAAAAAFwg/pXGk8DCkYDQ/s640/IMG_4054.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Another gun using and old tungsten tube, gear from the bicycle shop, and other bits and pieces I had around the house. The small gears are from the Dollar Store and came in a spirograph package.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-go_B6BZOVnU/UcPAnud6dqI/AAAAAAAAFwo/VUjYGcmSEVA/s1600/IMG_4072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-go_B6BZOVnU/UcPAnud6dqI/AAAAAAAAFwo/VUjYGcmSEVA/s640/IMG_4072.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">I knew these Tropicana tops would come in handy some day! With a little Rub 'n Buff, a downloaded gauge photo and topcoat of varnish, I transformed it into a pretty cool gauge.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DQ5Usm_OyYg/UcPA9Pw6tRI/AAAAAAAAFww/0ko1vdTJRZM/s1600/IMG_4049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DQ5Usm_OyYg/UcPA9Pw6tRI/AAAAAAAAFww/0ko1vdTJRZM/s640/IMG_4049.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This is a 12" x 12" canvas I prepainted with green, cream and rust acrylic paint. I used several sizes of gears from the bicycle shop, old watch parts from the jewelry store, curly cue plastic straw, springs, and a few buttons. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t8aZkWgerlo/UcPBXyZpt1I/AAAAAAAAFw4/ZrDpHx2wmDY/s1600/IMG_4076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t8aZkWgerlo/UcPBXyZpt1I/AAAAAAAAFw4/ZrDpHx2wmDY/s640/IMG_4076.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">I really like how the helmet turned out. I found a yellow kid's construction helmut at Goodwill for 26 cents. I spray painted it silver, added upholstery studs and a copper painted plastic straw on top. I bought the goggles from Home Depot for $2.00. I just spray painted them and used a little Rub 'n Buff for the details. With just a little imagination, found items around your house or the Goodwill, spray paint and some hot glue you can create all sorts of Steampunk items.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qeIYf_QEZlE/UcO_yJbAyoI/AAAAAAAAFwQ/wpmC_rePsVE/s1600/IMG_4063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="620" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qeIYf_QEZlE/UcO_yJbAyoI/AAAAAAAAFwQ/wpmC_rePsVE/s640/IMG_4063.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

Steampunk has become very popular especially in Adult and Young Adult fiction. Our library's Young Adult Summer Reading Program's theme is Beneath the Surface. I am planning a Steampunk library display for that area. Below is a water pistol I made out of a Dollar Store water gun, curly straws, plastic bubble wands and a plastic compass from Walmart's party section. I used Rub and Buff to get the gold and silver accents. I'm planning on making some goggles and a few other things....so stay tuned. Two of my co workers are also making some Steampunk articles for the display. I will post some more photos when it is complete. </div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;">'LIL DIGGER IS WOODSTOCK PUBLIC LIBRARY'S MASCOT FOR THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM, "DIG INTO READING". OUR CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN AND HER HUSBAND TRANSFORMED OUR TRAIN INTO A FRONT END LOADER. IT IS MADE OUT OF PLYWOOD, PAINTED YELLOW AND LOOKS AWESOME! </span></div>

The Woodstock Public Library usually has a train in the children's area but this summer it has been transformed into a front end digger! The theme of this year's summer reading program is Dig Into Reading. Linda, the children's librarian and her husband Al built and transformed the train one weekend. There are even books in the front loader. The kids have loved it!!!</div>

<br />
<br />
They also made the Jackhammer for the adult summer reading program theme of Groundbreaking Reads. He made the jackhammer out of plywood and painted it silver, adding handles and rivets for a finishing touch. And of course you need a hard hat to go along with it! Come on out and join the adult summer reading program at the Woodstock Public Library!<br />

<br />
I found this recipe for SHRIMP TACO SALAD in this month's Good Housekeeping magazine. The magazine first attracted my attention because it only cost $1.49. Where can you get a magazine for $1.49 these days? Next, the pasta salad on the front cover looked so beautiful and when I made it the next day, it tasted even better than it looked. I also wanted to try the salad above. It was just as delicious with such a nice blend of flavors and textures that just all seemed to align. Included in this salad is fresh avocado, grilled zucchini, grilled corn, grilled shrimp, watermelon, Fritos, cilantro and a wonderful lime hot sauce dressing. <br />

If you liked THE HELP and DRIVING MISS DAISY, you will like this book. I can't remember the last time I actually yelled out loud at a book and then cried at the end. It tears at your heart how cruel and unjust some people and situations can be. Check it out at your library and see if you like it as well.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6674409653560519781.post-22950209708207246052013-06-02T10:23:00.001-04:002013-06-02T10:24:37.868-04:00SAIGE'S NEW TOP<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This is a new top designed for Saige or any American Girl Doll. I want to make the sleeves more flared and the lower part of the tunic a little wider to look more like a '70s top. I made the white skinny jeans from a Liberty Jane pattern.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6674409653560519781.post-39827324210744485462013-05-29T11:26:00.000-04:002013-05-29T11:30:49.235-04:00AMERICAN GIRL DOLL PUPPY & DOGGY BED<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been testing out different accessories for the American Girl Dolls that might be fun and somewhat easy for young girls to make. Here is a little puppy and his doggy bed that I made out of an up cycled TIDE detergent bottle. I just cut the bottom off, and hot glued fabric bias binding around the rough edges. I made a little pillow and stuffed it with polyester fiberfil. I found the little <a href="http://titatoni.blogspot.de/2012/10/der-beste-freund-des-menschen.html">doggy pattern</a> on a german website with all the instructions in german. But all you really need is the<a href="http://titatoni.blogspot.de/2012/10/der-beste-freund-des-menschen.html"> pattern</a>. The next one I make I think I will shorten the little doggy so he will fit better into the bed. All in all, I think he would be cute and fun for an American Girl doll lover to play with! This craft would be too difficult for a child because there is a lot of sewing, but the dog bed might be a possibility.</div>

Today I made a fire pit for an American Girl Doll. I found a candleholder at Goodwill that I spray painted bronze. I made the fire out of felt, stitched it up and stuffed it just a little to give it form. Then, I hot glued pebbles around the fire and added some sticks I found in the yard. I found this idea on <a href="http://www.doll-it-up.com/2012/11/13/make-a-doll-campfire-part-2-the-patio-fire-pit/">Pinterest</a>. I think it is the perfect accessory for your dolls to pretend that they are making Smores!</div>

I just finished making the <a href="http://www.libertyjanepatterns.com/2012/05/sunshine-halter-knitting-pattern.html">"Sunshine Halter"</a> knitted halter top pattern sold by <a href="http://www.libertyjanepatterns.com/2012/05/sunshine-halter-knitting-pattern.html">Liberty Jane patterns</a> and designed by 123 Mulberry Street. It was so easy and quick to knit up. And, it fits the American Girl doll or any 18" doll perfectly! I changed the pattern slightly by making an I-cord to tie around the neck instead of the braid that was called for. I picked up this cute yarn at my local Goodwill in a huge bag for only $3.93 for 15 skeins!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now, I'm off to make another one.............</div>

I never quite know how my ideas will turn out. But, I'll have to say this one turned out exactly how I imagined it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our Summer Reading Program at the library starts the end of May. The theme for the Teen Program is "BENEATH THE SURFACE". I thought it would be cool to make a mermaid tail looking like it was diving into the water. It's makes you wonder what she looks like and what IS beneath the surface.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I decided to make my mermaid's tail out of paper mache.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nbqyh5tRZ70/UZK262Y2EbI/AAAAAAAAFp0/WnC5GsLAUaI/s1600/IMG_3902.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nbqyh5tRZ70/UZK262Y2EbI/AAAAAAAAFp0/WnC5GsLAUaI/s640/IMG_3902.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've found that the easiest thing to use to make paper mache is wallpaper paste and old newspapers. I bought this paste from Home Depot about 6 years ago and it's still going strong. It cost about $5. and I imagine if you were to make your own paper mache out of flour and water, you'd have to buy about $5. worth of flour anyway. It's easy to clean and no mold.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_cPdYXzlD3k/UZK3VREpkfI/AAAAAAAAFqE/lxAgrHZHueQ/s1600/IMG_3881.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_cPdYXzlD3k/UZK3VREpkfI/AAAAAAAAFqE/lxAgrHZHueQ/s640/IMG_3881.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I started by forming the shape I wanted out of chicken wire. (from Home Depot as well) I wired the edges together, bunched it together at the top just below where I wanted the fin to start and formed it in the shape I wanted.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDa9jE2E0sI/UZK3CF2taoI/AAAAAAAAFp8/eoaS2OHlqVA/s1600/IMG_3882.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mDa9jE2E0sI/UZK3CF2taoI/AAAAAAAAFp8/eoaS2OHlqVA/s640/IMG_3882.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, I started tearing paper and dipping into the wallpaper paste. Cover the entire surface with the paper mache and be sure to smooth down the edges. To quicken the drying process, I sometimes use a hair dryer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OogsB-BPzFk/UZK3l1m8ujI/AAAAAAAAFqU/Glai1f7h1TE/s1600/IMG_3886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OogsB-BPzFk/UZK3l1m8ujI/AAAAAAAAFqU/Glai1f7h1TE/s640/IMG_3886.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Mermaid tail completely covered with the newspaper paper mache.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uB2JtNzM4Mg/UZK3cTEJ3pI/AAAAAAAAFqM/owS_Miwz73k/s1600/IMG_0395.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uB2JtNzM4Mg/UZK3cTEJ3pI/AAAAAAAAFqM/owS_Miwz73k/s640/IMG_0395.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I next use Gesso (from Dick Blick) to paint over the newsprint. The gesso will keep the newsprint from bleeding through your top coat of paint. It is not mandatory, it just gives you a nice base to start painting on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Vsz0eORr5s/UZK3_vaPvpI/AAAAAAAAFqk/gjMvMbkk9rs/s1600/IMG_0399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Vsz0eORr5s/UZK3_vaPvpI/AAAAAAAAFqk/gjMvMbkk9rs/s640/IMG_0399.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here are the colors I pulled out from my watercolors and acrylics. I also found this package of glitter from the Dollar Store. I knew it would come in handy sometime.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nA7LdRadMWU/UZK3zfVs_oI/AAAAAAAAFqc/3-2GF5SPUkM/s1600/IMG_0400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nA7LdRadMWU/UZK3zfVs_oI/AAAAAAAAFqc/3-2GF5SPUkM/s640/IMG_0400.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And here it is after I completed painting the tail. It has glitter sprinkled on it randomly and just glistens. I used mostly watercolor paint. I rubbed slightly to blend the colors and when I did, I noticed that the outline of the chicken wire started to show through. That was perfect, because it looks like scales. Yea for surprises!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yec_JMFECLY/UZK4clRx0OI/AAAAAAAAFqs/siK48A_Q_kw/s1600/IMG_3905.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yec_JMFECLY/UZK4clRx0OI/AAAAAAAAFqs/siK48A_Q_kw/s640/IMG_3905.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I painted a little sign to add to the top of the bookcases "Beneath the Surface" out of scrap cardboard.<br />
I hope you'll try paper mache sometime. It is so much fun and it is a very cost efficient way to make props for the library!<br />

Today I made Saige an Artist's Smock. The American Girl Store sells accessories for Saige which include an easel, canvases, paints and brushes but NO smock. So, I figured every artist needs a smock........and a tie-dyed kerchief.............and a palette..........with paint dabs. These are now in my new etsy shop, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/itsadollsworld">IT'S A DOLL'S WORLD</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I read the two Saige books last week and I have to admit that I really liked them! They are sweet stories about family, girls' relationships and growing up. Saige lives in New Mexico. When I was in 4th grade we were assigned to write about a state. I chose New Mexico. I even got a letter back from the governor at that time! Saige loves to paint and has a close relationship with her grandmother. I am a pastel and watercolor painter as well. So I have enjoyed making clothes and accessories for Saige. Check out some of my creations.............</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g6b-AR28aEQ/UYLViDi3h4I/AAAAAAAAFnk/ahZ4V8IQ06w/s1600/IMG_3783.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g6b-AR28aEQ/UYLViDi3h4I/AAAAAAAAFnk/ahZ4V8IQ06w/s640/IMG_3783.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I tie-dyed this fabric sheet in 1995 while living in Denver. I made roman shades out of it at the time. I still have some of the left over fabric............I knew it would come in handy sometime.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GPOo3Qer1vM/UYLV-xvMTZI/AAAAAAAAFns/cqoRMdKMXTc/s1600/IMG_3781.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GPOo3Qer1vM/UYLV-xvMTZI/AAAAAAAAFns/cqoRMdKMXTc/s640/IMG_3781.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Saige's paint palette is made out of craft foam. I just dabbed some paint on to look like she has been painting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OLdPXbZZmSM/UYLWGOed7CI/AAAAAAAAFn0/218XHOR1D6I/s1600/IMG_3780.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OLdPXbZZmSM/UYLWGOed7CI/AAAAAAAAFn0/218XHOR1D6I/s640/IMG_3780.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The paint brush and the box of paints actually belong to a set I bought for my daughter's doll, Samantha, about 20 years ago.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zD0U8dbIPDk/UYLWQf7DYqI/AAAAAAAAFn8/sTI_r8xE4-M/s1600/IMG_3764.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zD0U8dbIPDk/UYLWQf7DYqI/AAAAAAAAFn8/sTI_r8xE4-M/s640/IMG_3764.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I decided to splatter some paint on one of the artist smocks that I made. I think it looks more realistic. <br />
<br />

<br />
I found the easel and small canvas at Joann's<br />
<br />

<br />
Here is a trio of skinny jeans I made using a <a href="http://www.libertyjanepatterns.com/">Liberty Jane pattern</a>. I used denim with spandex. I love how they turned out! They have four working pockets, mock fly, elastic in the waist and fit the dolls so cute!<br />
<br />

<br />
Here's a little top I made using a <a href="http://schoolhousepatterns.wordpress.com/">SchoolHouse pattern</a>. It is such a simple pattern that it would be a great choice to use to teach your daughter how to sew. I love the little ruffle on the bottom and it fits perfectly! It closes in the back with velcro and has matching capris if you want to make them as well.<br />

Saige, the 2013 American Girl Doll of the year, loves art. She paints with her grandmother in her studio everyday after school. When her school loses funding for their art teacher, Saige comes up with a plan to fund an after school art program. American Girl has an "art package" you can purchase for Saige which includes and easel, paints, brushes, a few canvases and palatte. But, it doesn't include an artist's smock. I decided to make one today. The one I made has a pocket on the front with two separate areas. It ties behind her neck and waist. Check it out..............</div>

I found the miniature watercolor set at Party City in their birthday party section. You can buy a bag full of these sets for a few $$$.<br />

Here is another pair of Skinny Jeans I made from a Liberty Jane pattern. I found the denim with spandex at Joann's. This pattern is so much fun to stitch up and fits the American Girl dolls perfectly! It has 4 working pockets, top stitching, faux front zipper and an elastic waist. Below check out the flip flops I made from craft foam and duct tape!</div>

Little girls love reading about the escapades of these little fairies and the books are flying off the shelves. Our meeting room was soon filled with little fairies, dressed as their favorite Rainbow Magic Fairy. Some came with their faces painted, even little baby sisters had fairy wings along with a few moms and grandmothers!!<br />
<br />
We decided to include 3 crafts, a few games including Pin the Wand on the Fairy, a Trivia Game, Crossword puzzle, various coloring sheets and dot to dots. We decorated the tables with tableclothes from the Dollar Store and draped glittered tulle around the edges. We gathered old prom dresses we had at home and decorated the walls. Not to mention the fabulous refreshments provided by a local cupcake maker who made cupcakes with "Nerds" on top. We served Mango punch, cupcakes and cookies with pink and yellow chips. The fairies were so well behaved and had a wonderful time!<br />
<br />
Enjoy the photos...........and check out the Rainbow Magic Fairies series.<br />

A couple of years ago I made Compass Necklaces to help promote our library's summer reading program. This year's theme is DIG INTO READING for the children's program and I thought I'd make Dinosaur Necklaces. I found a pack of assorted dinosaurs at our Dollar Store. Score! They are about 2" in length. I spray painted them with a shiny silver (in my garage), strung with cording (in my craft room) and added some fun beads (in my craft room, originally from Walmart). I'll take the bowl of beads and let all of my co-workers make their own necklace. Instant bling and a fun way to promote reading for our summer reading program. </div>
